How We Ate is a labor of love. It’s a series of publications (5 so far) chronicling the outdoor dining shelters that first appeared during the pandemic.

Born of necessity, unconstrained by regulations, these structures have changed not only how New Yorkers eat, but how the city streets look.

They’re a new kind of street art/street architecture that snuck in while regulations were lax. And they celebrate one of the great pastimes of New York, dining out. 

Ten years, fifty years from now New Yorkers will look back on the pandemic years and outdoor dining shelters will be one of the things worth remembering.
